what's in a laugh?

we don't crack up just for the fun of it. "laughter is an unconscious attempt to disarm people," says jo-anne bachorowski, a vanderbilt psychologist. in her study, men laughed 13 times around male friends, only eight with gal pals, when watching funny movie clips. women laughed 12 times with men and seven with females. "women who laugh around men are viewed as more attractive," she says; men have a subconscious, positive response to a woman's laugh. men generally laugh more with men so they'll be seen as friend, not foe.
